Synopsis:
In 1930s Beiping, Bao Er, a former wrestling master from the Qing dynasty’s Imperial Grappling Camp, performs with his apprentices at Tianqiao to make a living. One day, Liu Dabao, the senior disciple of the Guo family wrestling school, comes to challenge them. When a fight breaks out, Zhang Youlin steps in to help Bao Er. Impressed by Bao’s skill, Zhang asks to become his disciple, but Bao refuses.
To save face, the Guo school sets up a public challenge match with a cash prize. Desperate to raise money to open a shop, Zhang signs up for the contest. One by one, the Guo disciples are defeated by him. Just as victory seems certain, Guo Liangjie arrives with reinforcements, and Zhang is outnumbered.
Among the onlookers, a female student named Li Xinyi recognizes Zhang as the man who once saved her and begs her uncle, Bao Er, to rescue him. Bao arrives, calmly defusing every trap Guo Liangjie sets for him. In the end, Guo expels Liu Dabao for his deceit.
Bao takes Zhang in to recover at the wrestling hall, where Li Xinyi tenderly cares for him — and the two slowly develop feelings for each other…
